Black Roses

Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel
Mattie is a survivor all her men died young husband and sons Photographs on the mantel tell their short sad story Each photo has a black rose stiff curled paper in the corner of the frame I never used black to honor my own dead It has always been white white lilies But Mattie may have a point Finally some of us will have to put a black rose in the corner of her photograph Line it up with the others on the mantel
