Robert Peters (1924–2014) was a poet, critic and scholar born in Eagle River, Wisconsin, who taught for many years at the University of California, Irvine. The death of his young son in 1960 produced Songs for a Son, the first of more than thirty collections; later books took on historical and invented voices, from Ludwig of Bavaria to Elisabeth Báthory. As a critic he was fearless and funny in The Great American Poetry Bake-Off and Hunting the Snark. Chiron Review Press published his Love Poems for Robert Mitchum in 1992.
